It depends on your taste. HB Reviews rates it 2.5/5 and found its entertainment value uneven.
The Mongoose offers a familiar Liam Neeson action-thriller experience, elevated by its car chases but hampered by a formulaic plot and weak dialogue.
The Mongoose, starring Liam Neeson, attempts to deliver a high-octane thrill ride, but ultimately falls into the well-trodden territory of the formulaic action movie. Neeson plays Ryan 'Fang' Flanagan, a war hero falsely accused of a crime, who embarks on a cross-country car chase, aided by his former Special Forces battalion and a public that roots for his escape. While the premise promises excitement, the execution is uneven.
The film's greatest strength lies in its action sequences, particularly the car chases, which are competently staged and provide moments of genuine spectacle. The direction and cinematography offer a decent visual flair, making the pursuit sequences feel substantial. However, the narrative struggles to maintain momentum, often bogged down by clunky dialogue and nonsensical plot developments.
Flashbacks to Flanagan's military past, intended to add depth, often feel gratuitous and detract from the main chase. The supporting cast, including Marisa Tomei and Ving Rhames, deliver serviceable performances, but the characters themselves are largely underdeveloped, serving more as plot devices than fully realised individuals. Michael Chiklis's antagonist feels particularly underutilised.
The film's soundtrack, however, is a notable positive, adding a propulsive energy to the proceedings. Ultimately, The Mongoose is a serviceable, if uninspired, addition to Liam Neeson's action-thriller catalogue, offering enough car-chase thrills to satisfy genre fans, but failing to break new ground.
