The Amateur

James Hawes' 'The Amateur', released on 11th April 2025, plunges viewers into a world of espionage and personal vengeance, following a brilliant CIA decoder whose life is shattered by a terrorist attack. The film's central premise, of an introverted analyst taking matters into his own hands, holds initial intrigue, yet the storyline often treads familiar ground, failing to deliver significant narrative surprises. The writing and screenplay are frequently cited as the film's primary weakness, with critics noting a formulaic approach and a script that feels derivative of established spy thrillers.

This impacts the dialogue and storytelling, which can come across as uninspired and occasionally clunky, hindering deeper emotional engagement. While Rami Malek delivers an intense and committed performance as the unlikely vigilante, elevating the material where possible, the character development for him and the supporting cast often feels thin, preventing a truly compelling ensemble. Where 'The Amateur' finds its footing is in its technical execution, particularly in the cinematography and direction of its action sequences.

Several reviews highlight the spectacular and well-staged set-pieces, demonstrating a solid craft in these moments. Production design and editing are generally competent, serving the narrative without standing out as particularly innovative or problematic. The background sound and music are functional, providing an atmospheric backdrop without drawing significant attention.

Ultimately, while the film offers moments of thrilling action and a strong central turn, its reliance on well-worn tropes and a less-than-stellar script means it often promises more than it delivers, settling into the realm of a serviceably entertaining, albeit flawed, genre piece.
