Shane Black's 'Play Dirty' attempts to recapture the snappy dialogue and stylish action of his earlier successes, but ultimately falls short of its potential. Based on Donald E. Westlake's Parker novels, the film stars Mark Wahlberg as the titular thief, a character known for his strict code. The plot kicks off with a heist gone wrong, leading to betrayal and a quest for revenge that escalates into a larger, more convoluted scheme involving a South American dictator, the New York mob, and a wealthy magnate.
While the premise offers a solid foundation for a crime thriller, the execution proves uneven. Wahlberg's performance as Parker is described by some critics as a "phone-it-in" effort, lacking the charisma and depth needed to anchor the film. In contrast, LaKeith Stanfield as Grofield garners praise for his scene-stealing performance, offering much-needed energy and humour.
The film's dialogue, a hallmark of Black's work, is present but often feels less sharp and more perfunctory than in his previous films. Action sequences are a mixed bag, with some entertaining moments interspersed with dated CGI and pacing issues that make the film feel longer than its runtime. The direction by Black is competent, lending a certain visual flair, but it can't quite overcome the script's shortcomings.
The supporting cast, including Rosa Salazar, Tony Shalhoub, and Keegan-Michael Key, deliver solid performances, but many are underutilised. Ultimately, 'Play Dirty' is a film that looks good and has moments of fun, but its narrative struggles and inconsistent pacing prevent it from being a truly memorable crime caper.
