How to score a movie review consistently

Score each area from 1 to 5, then write one short reason for the number. The overall rating does not have to be a mechanical average: explain when one exceptional strength or serious weakness changes the final verdict.

1. Story / premise: Is the central idea clear, coherent and engaging? Consider stakes, originality and whether the story earns its outcome.
2. Writing / plot: Assess structure, pacing, logic and character motivation. Note where the screenplay develops or loses momentum.
3. Storytelling / dialogue: Consider clarity, tone, dialogue and emotional effect. Ask whether the film communicates its ideas without confusion.
4. Direction / cinematography: Look at staging, framing, camera choices, visual consistency and how effectively the director shapes the experience.
5. Production craft / editing: Review sets, costume, effects, continuity and editing rhythm. Judge whether the craft supports the story rather than distracting from it.
6. Acting / character development: Assess performance credibility, chemistry and whether important characters change or reveal meaningful depth.
7. Sound / music: Consider dialogue clarity, sound design, score and song choices, including whether silence or music strengthens key moments.

A simple five-point rating scale

• 5/5 — Exceptional: outstanding work with only minor limitations.
• 4/5 — Very good: strongly recommended despite identifiable weaknesses.
• 3/5 — Decent: worthwhile for the right audience, but uneven.
• 2/5 — Weak: notable problems outweigh the successful elements.
• 1/5 — Poor: fundamental failures make it difficult to recommend.

How to write the final review

1. Identify the exact title, year and format so readers know what was reviewed.
2. Open with a one-sentence verdict that states the main strength or weakness.
3. Summarise the premise without revealing major plot developments.
4. Group your evidence into the seven categories instead of listing random reactions.
5. Explain who may enjoy it and answer whether it is worth watching.
6. Finish with the overall rating and make sure the prose supports that score.
