A sincere Indonesian family drama whose patient performances give familiar lessons about pressure and healing real emotional weight.
Me Before Me approaches adolescent anxiety through a deceptively simple school assignment. Jati, a high-achieving student buckling under panic and his father''s expectations, begins tracing his family history and discovers that perfectionism can travel through generations. The film''s strength lies in treating both son and father as people shaped by fear rather than reducing either one to a lesson.
The young ensemble brings a natural, unpolished energy to the classroom scenes, while the family performances supply the deeper tension. Ringgo Agus Rahman gives the demanding father enough vulnerability to complicate his behaviour without excusing it. Jati''s distress is handled with care: panic is not used as a dramatic trick, and recovery is not reduced to one cathartic speech.
Director Gina S. Noer favours an intimate visual approach, keeping the camera close to domestic routines and small changes in body language. That restraint suits the material, although the middle section can feel slow and several revelations arrive exactly where a family drama veteran will expect them. The score occasionally underlines emotions that the actors have already made clear.
Even with those familiar beats, the film earns its hopeful finish through patience. It argues that family history matters not because the past dictates identity, but because understanding it can interrupt harmful patterns. Me Before Me is gentle, accessible and emotionally honest, with enough specificity in its Indonesian setting and performances to rise above a standard message movie.
Limited source coverage: factual and audience references provide useful context, but do not by themselves support the review's quality ratings.
Me Before Me is a gentle, affecting story about pressure, panic and the courage to interrupt inherited family patterns.

A tender, assured farewell that lets Nick and Charlie grow without losing the warmth that made their story matter.
A colourful, confident sequel whose catchy music and lively Wonderland design comfortably outshine its familiar plotting.
Will Ferrell's "The Hawk" is a familiar golf comedy that offers intermittent amusement, elevated by its strong ensemble cast but weighed down by a stretched narrative and repetitive humor.
