David Fincher's meticulous and atmospheric procedural offers a compelling, if lengthy, deep dive into the infamous Zodiac Killer investigation.
David Fincher's 'Zodiac' is a masterclass in procedural filmmaking, meticulously recreating the obsessive hunt for the infamous serial killer who terrorised the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The film eschews sensationalism for a grounded, almost documentary-like approach, focusing on the painstaking efforts of investigators and journalists to unravel the mystery. Jake Gyllenhaal, as cartoonist Robert Graysmith, and Mark Ruffalo, as Inspector Dave Toschi, anchor the film with performances that convey the consuming nature of the investigation.
Robert Downey Jr. also shines as the cynical journalist Paul Avery. Fincher's direction is precise, creating a palpable sense of atmosphere and dread without resorting to cheap thrills. The cinematography by Harris Savides is exceptional, capturing the period detail with a naturalistic, yet striking, visual style.
The film's commitment to historical accuracy and its detailed portrayal of investigative procedures are commendable, making it a deeply immersive experience. While its nearly three-hour runtime and deliberate pacing might test some viewers, 'Zodiac' rewards patience with its rich detail, compelling performances, and a haunting exploration of an unsolved crime that continues to fascinate. The film's strength lies in its dedication to the process, the sheer volume of information, and the human toll of an investigation that spanned decades and remains, to this day, a chilling enigma.
