This home invasion thriller offers a twisted premise and strong performances, though its narrative execution can be uneven.
Julius Berg's feature debut, 'The Owners', takes a familiar home invasion premise and injects it with a dark, unsettling twist. The film centres on a group of young criminals who break into a secluded rural house, only to find the elderly residents are far from defenceless, turning the tables in a brutal game of cat and mouse. While the core concept is intriguing and provides a solid foundation for a horror-thriller, the storyline's development often struggles with inconsistency and predictability.
The screenplay, co-written by Berg, is frequently cited for its uneven pacing and narrative choices that don't always capitalise on the initial promise. Some critics found the plot twists easy to anticipate, and character motivations for the younger cast members occasionally felt thin. The storytelling maintains a grim and nasty tone throughout, which some reviewers appreciated for its commitment, while others found it made the film a less appealing experience.
Dialogue, while serving the unsettling atmosphere, isn't consistently a highlight, sometimes leaning towards exposition rather than organic interaction. Where 'The Owners' truly shines is in its direction and performances. Berg effectively crafts a tense and claustrophobic atmosphere, making excellent use of the old manor house setting to heighten the suspense.
The production design of the house itself contributes significantly to the film's eerie mood. However, the standout element is the acting, particularly from Sylvester McCoy and Rita Tushingham as the elderly couple, and Maisie Williams as Mary. McCoy and Tushingham deliver chilling and compelling portrayals, often stealing scenes with their unsettling presence.
Williams also provides a strong performance, navigating her character's difficult circumstances with conviction. The background sound and music competently support the film's tension without drawing significant individual praise or criticism. Despite its narrative flaws, the film's strong central performances and effective atmosphere offer enough for genre enthusiasts to find value.
