Taking Lives

Taking Lives, directed by D.J. Caruso, presents a compelling premise of a serial killer who assumes the identities of his victims, a concept that initially promises a tense and intricate thriller. Angelina Jolie stars as FBI profiler Illeana Scott, brought to Montreal to assist in the hunt for this elusive murderer. The film benefits from Jolie's presence, lending a certain gravitas to her character's unconventional methods, which include lying in a victim's grave to gain insight.

Ethan Hawke as art dealer James Costa, a potential witness and later a romantic interest, provides a grounded performance, though the chemistry between the leads feels somewhat forced and underdeveloped. The film's visual style is competent, with a moody atmosphere that attempts to compensate for narrative shortcomings. However, the screenplay struggles to maintain momentum, becoming increasingly convoluted and reliant on predictable twists.

While the initial setup is intriguing, the plot devolves into a series of contrivances, particularly in its latter half, leading to a resolution that many critics found preposterous. The supporting cast, including Kiefer Sutherland and Olivier Martinez, are underutilised, serving more as red herrings than fully developed characters.
