Full Review

Prime Video's 'Spider-Noir' plunges viewers into a richly atmospheric 1930s New York, presenting a compelling blend of classic detective noir and superhero drama. The series, which premiered on MGM+ on 25th May 2026 before its global release on Prime Video on 27th May 2026, centres on Ben Reilly, an ageing private investigator haunted by his past as the city's sole masked vigilante, The Spider. The premise is strong, offering a fresh, darker perspective on a familiar archetype, forcing its protagonist to confront his former life amidst new threats.

The visual storytelling is arguably the series' greatest triumph. The cinematography and direction are exceptional, crafting a world steeped in shadow and stark contrasts that perfectly encapsulates the noir aesthetic. The option to watch the series in either 'Authentic Black & White' or 'True-Hue Full Color' is a distinctive feature, with many finding the monochrome version enhancing the immersive, period-specific atmosphere. Production design and editing largely contribute to this immersive quality, making the 1930s setting feel both authentic and vibrant, though some early pacing concerns were noted by a few critics.

Nicolas Cage's portrayal of Ben Reilly is a standout, widely praised for its depth and unique intensity. He brings a captivating, world-weary gravitas to the role, anchoring the series with a performance that is both nuanced and, at times, delightfully unhinged. The supporting cast, including Lamorne Morris as Robbie Robertson and Li Jun Li as Cat Hardy, also deliver strong performances, enriching the narrative with a compelling array of characters. While the writing features sharp dialogue and witty banter that aligns well with the noir genre, some found the overarching plot twists to be less innovative and occasionally lacking in substance, leading to a slightly mixed reception for the screenplay. However, the storytelling effectively weaves personal tragedy with a gritty investigative thriller, maintaining engagement throughout its eight episodes. The background score competently supports the mood, adding another layer to the series' overall appeal.

Ultimately, 'Spider-Noir' is a highly entertaining and stylish series, elevated by its visual flair and Nicolas Cage's compelling central performance, even if its narrative ambition occasionally outstrips its execution.
