The third instalment in the Sonic cinematic universe sees Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails facing their most formidable foe yet in Shadow, a mysterious and powerful adversary. The film maintains the franchise's signature high-octane pace, offering a barrage of explosive action sequences that are generally well-staged and engaging. The direction effectively captures the speed and spectacle expected from a Sonic film, particularly during its more intense set-pieces.

However, the narrative struggles to match the visual energy. Critics frequently note that the storyline, while introducing compelling new characters like Shadow, often feels generic, convoluted, or lacks significant depth. The screenplay is sometimes criticised for its formulaic approach and a reliance on established tropes, which can make the plot feel predictable.

Dialogue, too, occasionally leans towards exposition or feels clunky, hindering the emotional impact of certain scenes. Where the film truly shines is in its performances. Jim Carrey, returning as Dr.

Robotnik, is a consistent highlight, injecting the film with his characteristic comedic brilliance and boundless energy. His dual role is often cited as a major draw, providing much-needed laughs and charisma. The voice cast, including Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails, continues to deliver strong, charismatic performances that anchor the animated characters.

While some human characters may feel underdeveloped, the core ensemble's chemistry and Carrey's standout turn elevate the overall experience. The production design and editing are competent, serving the fast-paced action well, though the overall sound and music are largely functional rather than memorable. Despite its narrative shortcomings, the film largely succeeds in delivering a fun, fan-service-driven spectacle.
