Full Review

Apple TV+'s 'Shining Girls' presents an intriguing and complex premise, centring on Kirby Mazrachi, a newspaper archivist whose reality constantly shifts after surviving a brutal attack. When a new murder mirrors her own, she teams with a seasoned reporter, Dan Velazquez, to hunt a mysterious, time-travelling serial killer. The core concept is undeniably captivating, blending elements of crime drama, mystery, and science fiction to create a disorienting yet compelling narrative.

Elisabeth Moss anchors the series with an exceptional performance, portraying Kirby with ferocious intensity and remarkable nuance, effectively conveying the profound and lingering effects of trauma. Her ability to ground the character amidst the ever-changing reality is a significant strength, making Kirby's struggle palpable and engaging. Jamie Bell also delivers a chilling and unsettling portrayal of the antagonist, Harper Curtis, creating a truly menacing presence.

The supporting cast, including Wagner Moura as Dan, provides solid performances that complement the leads. However, the series' ambitious non-linear structure and complex mechanics occasionally lead to a somewhat uneven and clunky narrative, particularly in its early episodes. Some critics noted that the pacing could feel slow or "overlong," with the plot at times struggling to maintain momentum and getting lost in its intricate details rather than consistently focusing on character emotions.

While the storytelling effectively mirrors Kirby's disoriented state, it can be a challenging watch for some viewers. The direction, particularly in the initial instalments by Michelle MacLaren, contributes to a gorgeous and intense atmosphere, effectively utilising the Chicago setting to enhance the narrative. The production design also features quality details that enrich the period feel.

Claudia Sarne's musical score is excellent, employing reverb-drenched keys and discordant soundscapes to heighten the tension and disquiet, proving integral to the thriller's mood. Ultimately, 'Shining Girls' is a thought-provoking series that, despite its narrative imperfections, offers a rewarding experience for those willing to engage with its challenging structure. The powerful performances and compelling central mystery make it a worthwhile watch, especially for fans of psychological thrillers and character-driven dramas.
