Runner

Scott Waugh's 'Runner' presents a familiar premise of a former soldier thrust into a high-stakes delivery mission, but manages to inject enough B-movie charm and action to make it a watchable, if not groundbreaking, experience. Alan Ritchson, as the gruff courier Hank Malone, and Owen Wilson, as the more eccentric partner Ben Bishop, share a serviceable chemistry that anchors the film. Their dynamic, a classic odd-couple pairing, provides some of the film's more enjoyable moments, even if the script doesn't always give them the sharpest material to work with.

The plot, involving a critical medical delivery and a ruthless cartel, treads well-worn ground, offering few genuine surprises. However, the film compensates with a decent amount of action, including some hard-R violence and impressive stunts, which elevate it beyond a mere genre exercise. The pacing is generally brisk, keeping the audience engaged through the more predictable narrative beats.

While the film attempts to add emotional depth through Ritchson's character's backstory, these moments feel somewhat tacked on and lack the necessary impact.
