Full Review

Milap Zaveri's 2016 short film, 'Raakh', delves into a grim tale of vengeance, presenting a departure from the director's usual comedic fare. The premise, centring on a man's quest for retribution after his wife's murder, is inherently compelling and sets a dark, thrilling tone from the outset. The narrative unfolds with a taut screenplay, maintaining a sense of suspense as the protagonist confronts his captive. The film's strength lies in its ability to craft an unsettling atmosphere, utilising a grimy, squalid setting that effectively mirrors the characters' tormented states of mind.

Performances from the lead actors, Vir Das and Shaad Randhawa, are notably strong, with both delivering impactful portrayals that anchor the intense drama. Vir Das, in particular, showcases a serious and emotional depth, successfully breaking away from his established comedic persona. Cinematography contributes significantly to the film's dark aesthetic, featuring fiery visuals and competent camera work that enhance the overall mood.

However, 'Raakh' is not without its flaws. While the core concept is praised, some critics felt the story ultimately "runs out of spark" and lacks a certain emotional resonance, leaving it "devoid of soul." Richa Chadda's role, though pivotal to the backstory, is unfortunately underutilised, offering her little opportunity to contribute substantially to the unfolding drama. A significant detractor is the inclusion of an extended song sequence towards the end, which feels out of place and disrupts the film's otherwise tight pacing, leading to a perception of it being "microwaved to imperfection." Despite these shortcomings, 'Raakh' remains a watchable and impactful short film for those who appreciate dark thrillers, demonstrating a commendable effort in its genre exploration.
