Our Hero, Balthazar

Oscar Boyson's directorial debut, 'Our Hero, Balthazar,' is a scabrous and surprisingly touching examination of contemporary anxieties, particularly performative activism and the isolating nature of online life. The film centres on Balthazar, a wealthy New York teenager who, in an attempt to impress a crush, follows an online connection to Texas, convinced he can prevent an act of extreme violence. What unfolds is a bizarre, yet compelling, buddy film that delves into the mutual incomprehension and fascination between different facets of American society.

Jaeden Martell delivers a disturbing performance as Balthazar, a privileged youth whose activism appears to be more about social media validation than genuine conviction. Asa Butterfield is equally strong as Solomon, the online acquaintance who claims to be planning a school shooting. The chemistry between the two leads is a highlight, showcasing a nuanced portrayal of loneliness and the desperate need for connection.
