Full Review

Celine Song's "Materialists" plunges into the intricate world of contemporary relationships, presenting a narrative that is both ambitious and often thought-provoking. The film centres on a New York City matchmaker, Lucy, who finds her professional expertise in love colliding with her own complicated romantic entanglements. The premise, exploring the intersection of love, money, and societal expectations in modern dating, is sharply conceived and highly relevant.

The screenplay, while praised for its insightful critique of commodified intimacy, has drawn mixed reactions regarding its execution. Some find the dialogue "sharp" and "brutally honest", effectively skewering the "shallowness of modern dating". Yet, other perspectives suggest the writing can feel "over-explained" or that declarations of emotion sometimes veer into "cringeworthy" territory, lacking the subtle depth of Song's previous work.

Visually, "Materialists" is a standout achievement. Shabier Kirchner's cinematography is consistently lauded, creating a "gorgeous film" that is "beautiful to look at", capturing New York City with a sleek and polished aesthetic. The production design by Anthony Gasparro, with its "luxe interiors" and thoughtful demarcation of different social worlds, alongside Katina Danabassis's praised costume design, significantly enhances the film's visual storytelling.

Editing by Keith Fraase also receives specific praise for a "brilliant montage" that effectively contrasts the characters' realities. The performances from the central trio are a major strength. Dakota Johnson delivers a "superb" and "emotionally taut" portrayal of Lucy, navigating her character's complexities with charm and vulnerability.

Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal provide strong, nuanced performances, contributing to a compelling love triangle, with Evans particularly noted for a role that allows him to shine. Daniel Pemberton's score and the curated soundtrack are generally well-received, adding "glamour and sprightly energy" and an "intimate and insular" soundscape that supports the film's emotional beats, even if some felt it could have been more prominent in certain scenes. Despite its narrative imperfections, "Materialists" remains a compelling and stylish romantic drama, offering a fresh, albeit sometimes divisive, perspective on love in the modern age.
