Justice League

“Justice League” attempts to unite DC's iconic heroes, but the result is a frequently uneven and often muddled affair. The film's narrative, centred on the threat of Steppenwolf and the search for the Mother Boxes, feels generic and rushed, failing to fully develop its central antagonist or the stakes involved. This sense of haste extends to the introduction of new characters like The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg, who are given insufficient time to establish their backstories or motivations, making their integration into the team feel somewhat perfunctory.

The film's production history, involving a change in directors, is evident in its inconsistent tone and visual style. Moments of levity and humour, largely provided by Ezra Miller's enthusiastic portrayal of The Flash, often clash with the darker, more serious aesthetic established in earlier DCEU entries. While Gal Gadot continues to shine as Wonder Woman, delivering a performance that grounds the ensemble, other characterisations, including Ben Affleck's Batman, feel less impactful.

The visual effects, particularly the CGI used for Steppenwolf and to alter Henry Cavill's appearance, are frequently distracting and detract from the overall immersion. Despite these significant shortcomings, “Justice League” does offer some watchable sequences. The action is generally competent, and the dynamic between the assembled heroes, when it clicks, hints at the potential for a more cohesive team-up.

However, these brighter spots are often overshadowed by a convoluted plot, underdeveloped characters, and a noticeable lack of polish in its execution. Ultimately, the film feels like a compromised vision, struggling to balance its ambitious scope with a coherent and engaging story. It delivers a passable superhero spectacle, but one that falls short of its considerable potential.
