It depends on your taste. HB Reviews rates it 2.5/5 and found its entertainment value uneven.
A visually competent but narratively thin fantasy-western that struggles to find its footing.
Paul W.S. Anderson's 'In the Lost Lands' attempts to blend fantasy, western, and post-apocalyptic elements into a visually striking, albeit narratively hollow, adventure. Based on a George R.R. Martin short story, the film follows the sorceress Gray Alys (Milla Jovovich) and the hunter Boyce (Dave Bautista) on a quest into a dangerous wilderness for a queen seeking supernatural power. While the premise offers a compelling setup, the execution falters due to a threadbare screenplay and underdeveloped characters.
The dialogue often feels clunky, and the storytelling lacks the necessary connective tissue to make the plot engaging. Anderson's direction, however, manages to create some visually interesting sequences, and the production design offers a gritty, lived-in world. Jovovich and Bautista deliver solid performances, bringing a much-needed presence to their roles, but even their efforts can't fully compensate for the script's shortcomings.
The film leans heavily on its visual style and action set pieces, which are competently handled, but they ultimately serve as a distraction from the story's lack of depth. 'In the Lost Lands' offers moments of genre pleasure, particularly for fans of Anderson's previous work, but it ultimately feels like a missed opportunity to fully explore its intriguing source material and deliver a more cohesive and satisfying narrative.
