Only for a narrow audience. HB Reviews rates it 2/5 and considers its appeal limited.
This fifth 'Ice Age' instalment offers a visually busy but narratively thin adventure, primarily salvaged by the consistent charm of its Scrat segments.
The latest chapter in the 'Ice Age' saga, 'Collision Course', finds the familiar herd facing an existential threat from an asteroid inadvertently sent hurtling towards Earth by the ever-hapless Scrat. The premise, while grand in scale, is widely considered convoluted and uninspired, struggling to weave together disparate plot threads and feeling like a stretched concept for a long-running franchise. The writing and screenplay are frequently criticised for a lack of fresh ideas, relying on recycled jokes and a narrative that often feels disjointed and overstuffed with characters.
The dialogue and storytelling similarly fall short, with humour often described as weak, repetitive, and aimed squarely at very young children, failing to engage older audiences. The film's attempts at emotional depth for the main characters, particularly Manny's anxieties about his daughter's impending marriage, feel familiar and underdeveloped amidst the larger, more fantastical cosmic plot. Visually, however, 'Ice Age: Collision Course' presents a more competent picture.
The animation is generally vibrant, colourful, and technically proficient, with critics noting the spectacle of the cosmic sequences and the imaginative design of new locations like Geotopia. While the direction is functional, it doesn't quite manage to elevate the weak script. The voice cast, featuring returning talents, delivers competent performances, yet the characters often feel static, and new additions do not receive sufficient development to justify their presence.
The background sound and music are largely unremarkable, serving the narrative without standing out. Ultimately, while the film struggles with its core story and humour, the visually inventive and consistently entertaining escapades of Scrat remain a highlight, offering brief moments of genuine amusement.
