Good Boy

Ben Leonberg's 'Good Boy' plunges into the dark underbelly of a young man's life. Tommy, a volatile 19-year-old, finds himself separated from his friends and subsequently abducted. He awakens in the basement of a remote Yorkshire house, a prisoner of a peculiar family.

What unfolds is a descent into a situation far more complex and disturbing than he could have imagined. The film's premise, while rooted in familiar thriller tropes, is given a fresh, unsettling edge by the unexpected turn of events. The screenplay, however, struggles with pacing and narrative construction, leading to moments where the story feels underdeveloped.

Dialogue is used sparingly, contributing to a sense of unease and underdeveloped characterisation for the human elements. The cinematography and direction are standout elements, with Leonberg masterfully crafting a visually tense experience that keeps the audience on edge. The production design and editing effectively build a palpable sense of mood and atmosphere, making the remote house a character in itself.

The acting, particularly the portrayal of Tommy, is excellent, carrying the film with an undeniable magnetic presence. The score by Sam Boase-Miller and Abel Korzeniowski complements the eerie atmosphere, enhancing the suspense without overpowering the narrative. While 'Good Boy' excels in its technical execution and central performance, its narrative shortcomings prevent it from reaching its full potential.
