Doing Life struggles to deliver on its promising premise, weighed down by an overstuffed narrative and often clunky execution, despite earnest efforts from its lead cast.
Tyler Perry's latest drama, 'Doing Life', explores the compelling premise of a single mother and an incarcerated man forging an unlikely bond through heartfelt letters, offering a path to redemption and love. The film, released on Netflix, aims for an emotional urban drama, yet its execution frequently falls short of its ambitious themes. Critics widely point to the screenplay as the film's most significant weakness.
The narrative is often described as overstuffed, attempting to weave too many subplots – from workplace sexual assault and financial struggles to family drama and stolen art – into a single story, which ultimately hinders the development of the central romance. This leads to an awkward and clunky progression, with pacing that feels uneven and rushed, preventing the organic growth of characters and their relationships. Dialogue is frequently criticised for being unnatural and heavy-handed, further undermining the storytelling and emotional impact.
Direction, also handled by Perry, has been noted as 'flat', lacking a distinctive visual style that could elevate the material. While specific commentary on production design, editing, and sound/music is less prevalent, these elements do not appear to significantly enhance the overall experience. Despite these narrative and directorial shortcomings, the performances of the lead actors, Naomi Baker as Anika and Jay Reeves as Carousel, receive some commendation.
They bring an earnestness to their roles, attempting to ground their characters in sincerity, even when the script struggles to provide them with believable chemistry or consistent character development. However, their efforts are often not enough to overcome the film's fundamental structural and writing issues, resulting in a drama that feels more melodramatic than genuinely moving.
