Uwe Boll's 'Citizen Vigilante' offers a familiar premise but falters significantly in its execution, resulting in a largely uninspired and poorly constructed thriller.
Uwe Boll's 'Citizen Vigilante' attempts to tap into the zeitgeist with a timely, albeit derivative, vigilante narrative. The film follows Michael Sander (Armie Hammer), a man who takes justice into his own hands, becoming a social media sensation while clashing with law enforcement. While the premise of a modern-day 'Death Wish' has potential, the film struggles to deliver on its promise, marred by a weak screenplay and uninspired direction.
The narrative, which centres on Sander's crusade against criminals, feels both predictable and underdeveloped. The writing often resorts to clunky exposition and lacks the nuance required to make the character's motivations compelling or the plot engaging. Dialogue frequently falls flat, failing to create believable interactions or advance the story in a meaningful way.
Cinematography and direction are merely functional, offering little in the way of visual flair or tension-building, contributing to a sense of generic filmmaking. Armie Hammer's performance as the titular vigilante is serviceable, but he is given little material to work with, resulting in a character that feels more like a cipher than a fully realised individual. Supporting performances are similarly unremarkable, often hampered by the weak script.
The production design and editing are adequate, but do not elevate the material, leading to a film that feels technically competent but creatively barren. The background sound and music are largely forgettable, failing to add atmosphere or emotional weight to the proceedings. Ultimately, 'Citizen Vigilante' is a missed opportunity.
Despite a premise that could have resonated, the film is let down by its poor writing, uninspired direction, and a general lack of creative spark, making it a difficult watch for all but the most forgiving genre fans.
Uwe Boll's 'Citizen Vigilante' delivers a familiar vigilante tale that struggles with weak writing and uninspired direction.
