Black Box

Steven Quale's "Black Box" takes a routine domestic flight and transforms it into a harrowing ordeal, blending supernatural horror with sci-fi elements. The film excels in building suspense and atmosphere, effectively using its confined aircraft setting to create a sense of claustrophobia and dread. The premise of inexplicable phenomena and surreal encounters blurring the lines between reality and nightmare is intriguing and largely well-executed, keeping audiences guessing for much of its runtime.

Tom Brittney delivers a standout performance as Jeremy, a passenger whose grounded and methodical approach provides a much-needed anchor amidst the escalating chaos. His portrayal of a logical mind grappling with an illogical reality is convincing and human, making him the most compelling character. The supporting cast also contributes, with Holly Leena White offering a naturalistic performance as a flight attendant whose composure unravels under pressure.

While the film's pacing is generally effective, particularly in the first half, some critics note that the narrative occasionally rushes its mystery elements, and the dialogue can sometimes feel unnatural. The visual effects are a mixed bag, with some moments being impressive while others fall short. However, the direction and cinematography effectively maintain a tense and foreboding atmosphere throughout.
