Yes. HB Reviews rates it 3/5 and considers it entertaining overall.
A tense crime thriller that, while imperfect, is elevated by strong performances and a compelling backdrop.
Set against the volatile backdrop of the 1992 Los Angeles riots, '1992' attempts to weave a compelling narrative of two colliding worlds: that of Mercer, an ex-con striving for redemption and a better life for his son, and a father-son duo planning a dangerous heist. The film's premise, which juxtaposes personal struggles with historical turmoil, offers a solid foundation for a tense crime thriller. However, the execution of the screenplay and dialogue is somewhat uneven, leading to a narrative that occasionally feels predictable and lacking in depth.
Despite these shortcomings, the direction and cinematography manage to capture the gritty atmosphere of Los Angeles during this tumultuous period, lending a visual dynamism to the proceedings. The production design and editing effectively convey the escalating chaos, though the film sometimes struggles to fully integrate its disparate plot threads. Where '1992' truly shines is in its acting.
Tyrese Gibson delivers a standout performance as Mercer, anchoring the film with a nuanced portrayal of a father's determination. Ray Liotta, in one of his final roles, also provides a memorable and chilling performance. The supporting cast largely holds its own, contributing to the film's dramatic weight.
While the film doesn't entirely escape the tropes of the heist genre, its thematic exploration of father-son relationships and redemption, coupled with its historical setting, makes it a watchable, albeit imperfect, thriller.
