Uyir

M. Padmakumar's 'Uyir' attempts to blend an investigative thriller with an emotional tale, inspired by real-life incidents. The film follows probationary sub-inspector Ajeeb Rahman (Roshan Mathew) as he investigates the mysterious death of a woman, a case that becomes increasingly personal due to his own unresolved childhood trauma. While the premise is compelling and rooted in a socially relevant theme, the execution falters due to a predictable screenplay and an outdated narrative style.

The film's strengths lie in its grounded approach to police procedure and Roshan Mathew's sincere performance, which effectively conveys Ajeeb's vulnerability and determination. The emotional core, particularly in the climax, offers a satisfying, albeit melodramatic, resolution. However, the narrative struggles with pacing, often feeling sluggish and repetitive, especially with the overreliance on flashbacks.

The supporting characters, beyond Ajeeb and his immediate superior, are underdeveloped, serving more as plot devices than fully realised individuals. Despite its shortcomings, 'Uyir' manages to retain some emotional resonance, largely due to Mathew's performance and the film's commitment to exploring the human element within the crime. The cinematography and production design offer a decent visual texture, capturing the atmosphere of the locations.
