Hypothyroidism Tests: 10 Exams You Need To Know

If you are diagnosed that you have a thyroid problem there are still some physical examinations and laboratory tests that will be performed.  This is to confirm the prior diagnosis.  Hypothyroidism tests are essential like any other step.

10 types of hypothyroidism exams

The types of hypothyroidism tests may be conducted depending on the age of the person who needs it.  The first eight we will discuss here are for adults while the last two are for children.

1. Blood Tests.  This will show the degree of your condition.  The blood tests that are usually performed are thyroid stimulating hormone and thyroxine (T4) measurement.  If the result of these tests will indicate that you have a normal thyroid, the anti-thyroid body test will also be performed just to make sure that you are not affected by any autoimmune disease.

2. Thyrotropin-Releasing Hormone.  This is a type of test that is done to diagnose hypothyroidism that is caused by some diseases.  This is also done to ensure you that your thyroid problems can be treated properly.

3. Thyroid Scan and Radioactive Iodine Uptake Test.  This is another type of test that is performed in order to assess your thyroid gland that has shown abnormality during physical examination.

4. Computed Tomography (CT) Scan/Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).  This kind of examination is performed in order to evaluate the changes in your brain areas.

5. Routine Testing.  This is a type of test that is recommended for people who are more than 35 years old.  It will be done periodically to determine whether you are affected by hypothyroidism.

6. Anti-Thyroid Antibody Test.  This test will determine the type of antibodies that are affecting your thyroid gland.

7. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) Test.  This is a kind of blood test that is performed in order to measure the right level of your thyroid hormone.

8. Thyroid Hormone Test.  This blood test is done in order to measure the levels of your T3 and T4.  It will determine whether you are affected by hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.

9. Newborn Screening Test.  This is an advanced technology that involves testing the blood samples of a new born baby to determine if your child is affected by hypothyroidism and some types of body abnormality that may affect your child in the future.

10. Physical Examination.  If your child is suspected that he may be affected by hypothyroidism problem, an expert will perform some physical examinations in order to evaluate and determine the condition of your child.  The physical examinations he will do will include examining your child’s head to determine whether his skull has some soft spots.  He will also examine your child’s hands and fingers to see if they are enlarged or short.  He will also determine if your child has a growth deficiency.  This physical examination will be confirmed by blood tests, x-rays and thyroid scan, to determine the severity of your child’s condition.
