Acne treatment for pregnant women

The change in the hormones of a woman’s body during pregnancy is one of the causes for acne outbreak.  Not all women encounter the problem though.  For those who have difficulties on acne eruption during pregnancy, here are some things to consider:

• Topical acne treatments.  Treatments that are applicable both for acne and pregnancy are those products containing benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin and erythromycin.  There are no studies saying that these three products may gravely affect acne during pregnancy.

• Avoid products that contain hydrocortisone and sulfacetamide.  The reason for doing this is because there are no studies made to determine whether they are safe enough for treating acne of pregnant women.

• Check with your obstetrician gynecologist.  Consulting with your doctor is still the best thing to do as they could provide you the necessary safety nets that coincide with acne during pregnancy.  They could also assure you that your baby is in a healthy condition.  Regular monthly check-ups could ensure you and your baby a healthy result.

• Take prenatal vitamins.  This aids in conditioning the hair and skin thus destroying the possibilities of having acne during pregnancy.  You just have to religiously take these vitamins as instructed by your doctor and see to it that you take the right medicine depending on the month at which you are conceiving.  Your health authorities would change your medications every now and then.

• Avoid the use of tretinoin and hydroquinone.  These two agents are known for its harsh effects on a pregnant woman.  They form part of the basic ingredients of cleansers used to drive away acne, thus they should be avoided during pregnancy.  Use of products with these substances especially during the first trimester of conception could lead to birth defects.

Precautions on acne and pregnancy

It is best for a woman to stay healthy, eat healthy and live healthy when she is pregnant.  Avoid stress, fatty and spicy foods and alcohol as these three could lead to acne eruption.  Drink plenty of water in order to wash away the dirt from your body.
